Back to School

I finally submitted my application to go back to BYU. I have mixed feelings about this. First of all, there could be a chance that I won't get in...hopefully a small chance since I'm a former student. But if I am accepted, I'll be starting classes in January. Since my husband will also be studying and working, and neither one of us wants to opt for day care, we will most likely end up taking our baby with us to some classes. I think the main reason it took me so long to apply to school was for this reason. I find the idea of taking my baby to class extremely intimidating. I remember as a young student watching with horror the occasional young mother with her baby in class, wondering why on earth she had the baby with her, why she was even taking classes, and why was she disturbing everyone around her? And let's be honest, my baby is not easily entertained and requires a lot of hands on time and care. Regardless, I am determined to get my degree while I'm still young and before it becomes even more difficult for me when I have more children.

What are your thoughts about mothers who bring their children to class? Any advice? Words of council?

Amy,
Saoirse was only 10 days old when I went back to school. I took him to school with me till he was two. Not every class but most of them especially since I was breastfeeding. This was at CCSN which is now CSN and I was the only one who had a baby/toddler with me. It was difficult and at times disruptive but the alternatives for me, to stop breastfeeding or drop out, were not good either. I think you will do great and that is one of the cool things about a University that acknowledges parents as students and makes allowances for them. BYU is an awesome school and if I was you I would take advantage of whatever I could now and get my degree. The best of luck to you Amy.

I never knew it was allowed to bring babies to class! I do know that whatever you feel right about and put your mind to--you can accomplish! We'll be praying for you all.

I had some teachers who absolutely refused to allow kids in the classroom and others who encouraged it. I took online classes when I could so that I didn't have to keep "shushing" emerson, but when I did take him, everyone was pretty supportive and seemed to enjoy having him there. And Amulek is so stinking cute I can't imagine anyone complaining about having him near. Wish I was closer and he could come play with Emerson and I all day! I think going back to school is a great idea and I'm super proud of you. It won't easy, but it will definitely be worth it. love you!

That sounds fabulous! I hope that you get back in to BYU- but even if that doesn't work out, there's a lot of other options- Independent Study or online courses are more popular and well-accepted than ever. It's great to have that security for back up and self confidence, too. :)
