A litle more Halloween history...

Snap-Apple Night, painted by Irish artist Daniel Maclise in 1833. It was inspired by a Halloween party he attended in Blarney, Ireland, in 1832. The caption in the first exhibit catalogue:
There Peggy was dancing with DanWhile Maureen the lead was melting,To prove how their fortunes ranWith the Cards ould Nancy dealt in;There was Kate, and her sweet-heart Will,In nuts their true-love burning,And poor Norah, though smiling stillShe'd missed the snap-apple turning.
On the Festival of Hallow Eve.
Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).
The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.
To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.
During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.
By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.
The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.
By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

Happy Halloween!

Pumpkin: Happy Halloween, my skeleton friend.

Skeleton: No, hoy es el Dia de los Muertos, pero no se por que tengo estas armas de fuego...
(yeah, I get a little bored.)

A great birthday weekend.

This weekend was awesome. I got to see family, skip class, and just even go shopping and out to dinner. Not to mention the awesome Kirkmount concert on Saturday night. However, I did not take any pictures of family, or shopping, or Kirkmount (so shoot me) because I thought that Mom or Allyson would have some. Not to worry, though. I did get some pictures of my apartment when I came home on Sunday night. This is what my crazy roommates came up with in my absence:

If you can't tell, the ribbons are strung across the ceiling like a curtain so that the living room and the hall are separated.

Here's Kaylee making no-bake cookies, or "gaggies" as she calls them. I told her once that I really like them and so she made some for my birthday. They got me Phase 10 dice for my birthday so we played that as soon as I opened it. It was pretty intense because some of us are kind of competitive...

Aleks was working on my birthday playlist. As I walked in the door she played Happy Birthday and we listened to other birthday related songs that were really funny.

Signs like these were everywhere in our apartment. And I mean everywhere. When I opened my food cupboard in the morning to get cereal, a birthday sign popped out. Even our bathroom mirror is covered in birthday messages, written with window markers. It was really funny and very thoughtful of my crazy roommates.

Is this not funny?

Target is releasing a new line of clothing: Bowie by Keanan Duffty. So, this designer (who's clothes are actually pretty cool, I've seen them before) decided to make an entire clothing line inspired by David Bowie. What are the odds? And the best part is that it's available to the masses because you can buy it at Target. What luck!

In the immortal words of Garfield...

It's been a gloomy and depressing couple of days. Probably because of the snow and because I haven't eaten much. Doesn't anxiety make you not hungry? It probably also has to do with the overload of homework that keeps piling up. In any case, I can't wait for my family to come this weekend (even though Ally's not coming and I really wanted to see her). I wish this week could wizz by because Saturdays are by far the best days of the week. Not only do I get to go to Karate which is so much fun, but I pretty much get to spend the whole day with cousins and not have to worry about anything else. And I just realized that even though I hated the snow, it was the first fall of the season and I didn't get any pictures. Dumb snow.

Somebody call Mulder or Scully...

You Are an Alien

You're so strange, people occasionally wonder if you're from another world.
You don't try to be different, but you see most things from a very unique, very offbeat perspective.
Brilliant to the point of genius, you definitely have some advanced intelligence going on.
No matter what circles you travel in, you always feel like a stranger. And it's a feeling you've learned to like.

Your greatest power: Your superhuman brain

Your greatest weakness: Your lack of empathy - you just don't get humans

You play well with: Zombies

A little Halloween history...

Here's the history of the Jack O' Lantern in case anyone was wondering(Taken from History.com).The new colors on the blog are in honor of this post. They will revert back to their old colors with the next post :)

People have been making jack o'lanterns at Halloween for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack." According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.
Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O'Lantern."

Friday is a good day.

I don't really have anything interesting to say. I'm in the library trying to find something to do because even though I worked on my homework yesterday at the Stubbs, I forgot the paper with all my notes on it so that I can't type up my papers. Arggg. Luckily its Friday and though I don't have anything planned, it's going to be a good day, I can tell. And that's pretty much it for now.

The Coolest Boots Ever.

So, I pretty much loved these boots the instant I saw them. They're kind of like the ones that I told Susan about (and she called me nerd for wanting them because I thought they looked like Luke Skywalker's Hoth boots). Well, Susan, prepared to be related to the ultimate nerd! Not only are these boots awesomely awesome, they look vaguely familiar...

Something funny...

Juanes, the very talented Colombian singer-songwriter, is coming out with a new album at the end of the month. I'm pretty excited, but the hit single from the album was released in September so my roommate Aleks and I watched the music video the other day. It has a surprise ending so watch until the end! We were laughing pretty hard. And besides, it's a good song: the lyrics are very cute. Enjoy!

Salt Lake

Okay, so I didn't take my camera but Ashley took a lot of pictures so when I get them from her, I'll put them on. This weekend Sam, Ashley, their friends Valerie, Mike, Whitney, and I went to Salt Lake to the Tracy Aviary. It was kind of cold and cloudy (like most Saturdays this month) but it was so much fun because there was hardly anyone there. There were all sorts of magnificent birds and the park itself was beautiful. My favorite bird was the vampire vulture that looked like the Harpy from The Last Unicorn. My other favorites were these crazy stork looking things with rock star hair/feathers. They were very friendly and the one danced for us.

After the Aviary we went to the Gateway (comparable to Henderson's District, only bigger). We looked in really expensive stores and ate at Costa Vida...hmm, flan. So then we walked around some more and spent a lot of time in this huge Barnes and Noble where I read a good portion of this really creepy book. It was good though because Halloween is coming up!

Okay, so now the fun is over and I have to prepare for my Humanities test which is on Tuesday. It's going to be incredibly difficult because even the TA during our review session couldn't tell us what's on the test because she didn't know how to explain the material well enough. And she kept giving us the wrong information for the art pieces that we have to know. Well, we'll see what happens.

Asher Samuel

Ha! I think I'm the first one with a picture of Baby Carroll on my blog. Isn't he the cutest? I think he looks like Isabel...who in turn looks like Ivan. Sorry, Manda.

Halloween!

Here are some pictures of the few Halloween decorations that we have. I got the pumpkins and Kaylee's mom sent us the the other stuff. I'm so excited for Halloween except for the fact that I don't have a costume. I was going to go as a vampire but the cool teeth I was going to buy went up in price over the summer (stupid Halloween inflation) and I don't want to spend that much on one part of a costume. So now...I'm constumeless. I have the leather jacket that Dad brought up for me. Maybe I'll go as a gothic zombie or something... :D

This is not a Halloween decoration but a messy room and my new quilt! Michael the quilter does a pretty good job - I love the beach pattern that he quilted on it. Thanks to Mom and Michael for my cute new look!

Stress free my foot!

So, more essays due this Friday. I've taken 3 tests in the last 2 days (two of which I'm not so sure about) and I have a huge assignment due tomorrow. I saw a sign for a club on campus - it had something to do with Stress Free Students or something like that. If they want me to be stress free then why don't they write my essays for me? Anyway, I'll try to update more often so that my name can also be taken off Julie's list. I'll take a picture of our apartment tomorrow and post it, as our apartment is now decorated for Halloween.

Here comes the weekend....

I'm in a state of suspense - Brian and Susan (+ chitlins), Dad, and Maddie are coming up tonight for a visit. Manda is due to have Loco Eduardo any time and I have a huge Anthropology essay due tomorrow which I can't seem to fatten up no matter how hard I try. Also, the weather is supposed to be bad again for Saturday (is this a sign that we shouldn't go sailing?) and Mandy and her friend Lindsey are coming to spend the night Saturday. And I'm hungry. Right now. Which means I'm going to have to go to the store and get food....hmm...

Wet, cold Saturday

So on Saturday it pretty much rained all day and Uncle Dave and I couldn't go sailing because it was too windy and cold on the lake. So we're going up next weekend and we're going to listen to conference out on the boat. Sounds like a good time, eh?

Why?

Allyson, I think you should remember this book. I just had to share this because I couldn't believe that anyone would make a movie of the scariest children's novel I've ever read. Fortunately, although the animation looks slightly creepy, it will not be done by Dave McKean which will decrease the creepiness by at least 50% (I hope).

Whoa, what happened?

Sorry, I just needed a little change in the blog layout. I'll probably get sick of it and revert back to the old style in a few days. Enjoy it anyways.

Sting? en Espanol?

So nothing really has been happening much. I've been listening to Pandora radio quite a bit and I discovered the Spanish version of Sting: Nek. If you don't believe me listen to him and tell me what you think (even though he's got that silly Spanish accent):

Another week in paradise...

No pictures to show but don't worry - I won't forget my camera when I go sailing with Uncle Dave on Saturday. This week has been really busy so far: my to-do lists have about 30 tasks to accomplish and they keep growing. Luckily I finished my music project that I was stressing about and two of my papers that were both due today. I also had my first Spanish test on Monday and Tuesday. I'm not sure how I did on the written part but I did really well on the oral section. Tonight I'm planning on going to the international cinema to watch Antigone (bleh) for extra credit in my humanities class.

Yesterday was great fun in that Aunt Joy and I drove to Fairview to make sure that the motor home thermostat was in proper order. I almost hit what we thought was an elk because it was too big to be a deer. Good times... I'm really excited for Halloween. I know its still September but I'm already wearing by Halloween shirts and I'm going to the dollar store to get some decorations. We've got to have something in our drag little apartment or I'm going to go insane (if that hasn't happened already).
